Stanley Cup Finals - Power Plays Give Penguins a Game 3 Victory

Author: Cindy Ferguson

The Pittsburgh Penguins finally rallied together on Tuesday. Game 3 of their series against the Detroit Red Wings was a crucial one; in a startling repeat of last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, the Penguins began this year’s playoffs by losing the first two games of the series. After such a shoddy performance, speculation grew that the Wings would sweep their ill-fated rivals and claim what would be their fifth Stanley Cup since 1997.

But, again shadowing last year’s final series, the Penguins managed to take Game 3, 4-2.

The win came as something of a shock. Not only were the Penguins up against one of the NHL’s strongest teams (the Red Wings have boasted an incredible regular season and an even better postseason), but Pittsburgh was feeble on the ice in the first two periods.

Granted, Penguins center Max Talbot did score the first point, his fifth in the postseason. However, in the nearly 11 minutes that followed, the Penguins were left watching the Red Wings score two goals – the first by Henrik Zetterburg and the second by Johan Franzen – before they shot again. Fortunately, the shot – by Kris Letang on a power play – gave them their second point and tied the game. Although neither team scored in the second period, the Penguins made only 4 shots against the Wings’ 14. Overall, the Penguins were outshot 26-11 in the first two periods.

It wasn’t until the third period that the Penguins came out fighting on the ice.

It was a combination of luck and skill that finally gave the Penguins their victory. They were able to locate the colossal Wings’ Achilles heel: the penalty kill.

Although the Wings may be juggernauts in almost every other arena, they round out the bottom of the list for the NHL playoff’s penalty killing statistics, ranking 14th out of 16 teams with a dismal 71.4% penalty kill rate. Of 63 penalty kills in the playoffs, the Wings have given up 18. It is a trend that began in the regular season, where the Wings were ranked 25th with just above 78%.

The Penguins were able to capitalize on this weakness. Of three power play chances given to them in Game 3, the Penguins were able to score twice. Their second power play point came just over 10 minutes into the third.

While the Wings’ Jonathon Ericsson was off the ice for interfering with Matt Cooke, Pittsburgh was making up for its abysmal shooting in the first two periods with nine consecutive shots. With Sidney Crosby and Bill Guerin screening Wings netminder Chris Osgood, Evgenie Malkin passed the puck to Sergei Gonchar, who slapped it from center past Osgood.

It was the point that gave the Penguins a lead, and ultimately, a victory.

“The power play [by Gonchar] was an unbelievable job by a handful of guys out there,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said, “keeping the play alive and giving Gonch a chance.”

“At that point,” Wings coach Mike Babcock granted, “they took over. They got the power play in the third and we didn’t.”

It is on power plays that the Penguins need to stake their advantage. With 21.4%, Pittsburgh is ranked at 6th in the playoffs. It is only during power plays that Penguins star Sidney Crosby is given any space to move. (Crosby has yet to score in the series, and thus far claims only one assist.)

If Marc Andre-Fleury can keep up his Game 3 performance – he made 27 saves on Tuesday – and Detroit is left sitting in the penalty box, the Penguins might have a chance.

Game 4 is Thursday. About the Author:

Ncaa Basketball - Stephen Curry Surpass Scoring Record And Becomes One Of The Best Players In Ncaa

Author: Ally White

The current junior point guard of Davidson, 20-year-old Stephen Curry, surpassed the team's scoring record set by John Gerdy in 1979 in the game against Georgia Southern last Saturday. Curry needed 30 points to improve Gerdy's record and at the end the junior point guard scored 34 points, finishing with a total record of 2,488 points. With this, Curry has become the best all-time scorer in Davidson history and one of the best players in the college basketball level. Curry was named the Cinderella man of last year's NCAA tournament as he took Davidson to the Elite 8 for first time since 1969.

Curry started his basketball experience in high school playing for the Charlotte Christian School, were he was named all-state, all-conference, and MVP team as he scored over 1700 points during his time at that school. Curry also attended the Middle School at Queensway Christian School in Ontorio, Canada. During his time at Canada, Curry led his school team to an undefeated season and shot a 48% at the three point line. Despite of his success at the high school level, Curry didn't have any major college's scholarship offers; since many thought that maybe Curry couldn't handle the physical scenery of the major conferences. However, he proved them wrong, as he has had three amazing seasons with Davidson College.

During his freshman year, Coach McKillop was impressed with his ability and considered that Curry was a really special player. During that season, Curry led the Southern Conference in scoring, averaging 21.5 points and having 4.6 rebounds per game. That freshman season, Curry took Davidson to the NCAA Tournament where they were the 13th seed but lost the first round against the University of Maryland 82-70. At the end of that season 2006-07, Curry received the award of the Conference Freshman of the Year, plus MVP tournament and other awards.

At his sophomore year, his impression in the conference and the league was more recognized, averaging 25.9 points per game and taking Davidson to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament, by beating well-recognized schools like Gonzaga, Georgetown University and Wisconsin, before loosing later against the actual champion Kansas with a score of 54-52. During these four games, Curry scored more than 30 points and his talent was acclaimed by a lot of followers. At the end of that season, people though that he would jump straight to the NBA, but instead he decided to stay in the college level and get more experience.

Currently in his junior year, Curry remains to be a key player for Davidson, averaging 29 points and 5.8 assists per game. And with a 24-6 overall record and a 17-2 conference record, Curry and his team expect to qualify for the NCAA tournament for a third time. For now Davidson has already qualified for the NIT Invitational and has captured the SoCon South Division title after having the best league overall record.

The next game of Davidson will be against Elon Phoenix, which will be the last game of the regular season and will be held on Monday March 2nd at Elon Phoenix University. Moreover, after that game, on Saturday March 7th, Davidson will play the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. The victory at this conference tournament would give Davidson a place to the NCAA tournament. We hope the best for this great point guard and his team the Davidson College, which we'll be probably watching in the March Madness again this year.

Should Kids Train in Mixed Martial Arts?

Author: Frank Lucer

Senator John McCain called it "human cockfighting." Others have referred to it as a ferocious, no holds barred, bare-knuckled street fight. Are these accurate assessments of mixed martial arts (MMA)? And given that many people share these impressions, should children be encouraged to participate in the training?

During the past decade, MMA has become explosively popular. The sport has also become a focal point of controversy. It has polarized society into two distinct camps: those who are drawn to it and those who are horrified by it. Meanwhile, an increasing number of parents have begun enrolling their kids into mixed martial arts classes, igniting a growing surge of protests.

In this article, we'll explore the issue of whether children should train in MMA. We'll take a closer look at how society perceives the sport and the fallacy of a commonly-held fear about it. I'll explain the risks involved as well as the potential benefits young people stand to gain from participating.

Battling A Societal Trend

Critics of the sport argue that it feeds into a growing societal lust for violence. Further, they contend that encouraging young people to participate not only introduces them to that violence, but teaches them to revel in it. To be sure, mixed martial arts has earned a reputation for brutality. However, much of that reputation is due to its earliest incarnation when rules were all but non-existent. In truth, the sport has changed dramatically over the last several years.

Dispelling A Common Fear

One of the most prevalent concerns about involving kids in MMA training is that doing so creates a tendency toward violent behavior. That is, kids will become more willing to resolve problems violently. It's worth noting that this is a common fear that many parents have about karate, Aikido, and Taekwondo classes. However, evidence has shown that such training has the opposite effect.

Rather than encouraging violence, mixed martial arts training inspires discipline and respect. As one 8-year-old MMA student recently explained to the popular television show 20/20, "We're not in there to hurt each other. We're all friends here. We're just in there to have fun and learn."

Risk Of Injury

Critics also argue that there is an increased likelihood of serious injury during MMA training. This claim requires a closer inspection of the sport. Indeed, there is a risk of injury involved. But, it's important to place this risk in the proper context. According to statistics released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), basketball, baseball, cycling, and football resulted in nearly 1 million child emergency room visits in 1998 alone. Other youth sports were responsible for hundreds of thousands more.

This is not to suggest that mixed martial arts for kids is without risk. Rather, my point is to clarify that all sports involve an element of risk for children. Presuming that MMA presents an extreme hazard is inconsistent with existing evidence.

How Young People Benefit

As noted above, kids tend to develop a stronger sense of discipline and respect as a result of participating in mixed martial arts classes. And while there will always be individual children who stray from the norm, most will never use their fighting skills outside the gym. In fact, they're taught to avoid doing so.

Martial Arts Around the World

Should you enroll your kids in MMA training? It's a matter of preference given your goals and those of your child. The important thing to realize is that much of the fear that surrounds the sport is baseless. Like all martial arts training, it can help children develop physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Football Preparations - Things You Should Know Before You Hit the Battlefield

Author: John Rockwell

There are many reasons why young students dream of joining the football varsity team. One is because they love the sport and dream of playing for the National Football League someday. Others find it as a tool to enhance their self-esteem. While there are those, who want to keep the family pride alive.

Whatever reason you have, remember that it is not easy. Trying out for the football team is not a wall in the park. There is more to it than training hard as well. The challenge does not end after you make the team. You have to be careful while being aggressive. In addition to that, you have to focus on important things too.

Getting Started

It is different when you are one of the audiences, cheering for a team. You are not wearing the NFL helmet to protect your head during the tackle. You wear it in support of the team you are rooting for. If you want to be part of the team, make sure you wear the right gear for the team.

Unlike basketball, you wear more than just the uniforms, socks, and appropriate shoes. In football, you will need pads, under armor, athletic tape, cleats, gloves, helmets, and face masks. Wearing the complete protective gear will help you walk out of the playing field unharmed. You have to wear them even if you are just practicing with teammates. Keep in mind that you do not want to miss a game because of an injury during a practice game.

Additional Preparations

You should also do additional preparations. Trainings and practices will help enhance your abilities. However, you have to watch out for your health as well. You need loads of carbohydrates before every game. You need it to keep you energized. Eating well is important but you should also consider the time. You cannot eat and play. You should be able to include that in your schedule.

It is also important that you be fit physically. Exercise is very important. You have to pump up your blood and stretch your muscles before you get physical with your teammates. It is important to pay attention to what your coach tells you. If he asks you to run, run. He surely knows better than most of the players do.

Before playing

When headed for a game, you have to be ready. It is important that you reach the venue early. This will give you chance to warm up better. Organize your things and wear the necessary pads. Do not forget to have your ankles taped as well.

See to it that you wear the needed gear. The pros never forget their NFL helmets and you should not too.

If you want to join the National Football League someday, you have to start living the life of a football player today. Manage your time well. You have to achieve balance between school and the sport. You have to be up for the challenge as well. You need to have time for home works, practices, family, friends, and food. For a student, that is not easy to manage.

Golfing on the Beautiful Courses of Turkey

Author: Grahame Simpson

When we think of golf, probably Turkey is the last place that comes to our mind. But if you go back in history, you will find that golf has been around in Turkey since 1895.

As the number of people visiting Turkey has gone up dramatically in the last few years, golf architects have come up with the idea of designing some of the most excellent golf courses in the world.

One activity people enjoy during their vacation is playing golf and with tourism looking upwards in Turkey this is a wonderful way forward.

It has become difficult to choose where to play, as numerous world class golf courses have mushroomed in Turkey.

Turkey is situated on the Mediterranean, in the Anatolian region of West Asia. It is a small section of Mediterranean Europe alienated by the Turkish Straits. The country is a vivacious blend of the distant past and a dominating presence of the sea. Flowing from the Northwest through Istanbul, The Bosporus divides Europe from Asia as it merges with Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. This creates breathtaking panorama in the region. The magnificence of Turkey evokes unusual warmth that is soaked in timeless traditions and an aspiration to travel.

This exotic land, athwart with spectacular cloud covered mountains, breathtaking valleys, moorland and plateaus, is embossed with the permanent mark of the imprint of the Ottomans and Romans with the numerous gratuitous wars.

Turkey is a live museum with more antiquities than any other place. It will overwhelm you with numerous ruined temples, medieval castles and Islamic architecture. The region is inundated with ceramics, sculpture and sacred frescoes. They shape an exotic reflection of the culture and its people. You can see hooded women and mustachioed men going about their daily routine.

Markets here are bustling with fascinating products sold by the most hospitable populace this side of Ireland. The land has turned people into ingenious fishermen, farmers, weavers and businessmen. In fact Turkey is among the very few countries that have surplus production of crops.

Antalya is the most important city on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, and is also the centre of the Turkish Riviera. Around half an hour from Antalya airport, the golfers will discover an amazing golfing sanctuary with four outstanding courses and option of marvelous five star hotels designed along the Mediterranean Sea.

Belek is the budding golf center of Turkey. In fact while designing the layout the golf architects pay a lot of attention to the expectations and preferences of European golfers.

Belek is an ideal place for golf courses with its long stretch of sandy golden beaches and untouched natural attractions. It has the perfect ambience for an exceptional game of relaxed golf with a spirit of competition.

Belek is becoming a contemporary luxurious holiday spot as a paradise for golfers with its summer season lasting for almost 8 to 9 months. The climate is typically Mediterranean with dry and hot summers and moderate and wet winters.

The sunshine can be enjoyed from April to October and visitors will find winters extremely pleasant.

Belek is one of the most famous places for the tourism industry in Turkey and is home to a plethora of luxurious hotels, entertainment and other services. When you are in Belek don’t miss the magnificent Kur?unlu Waterfall which has more than hundred species of bird nesting around it, with an intriguing hidden cave at the back. There are a number of other historic spots including, Aspendos the ancient amphitheater, which can hold almost 15.000 spectators.

The golf courses at Gloria and the Nobilis in Belek have hosted Turkish Seniors Open and have the European Seniors qualifying school. The best thing about all this is that Turkey offers, simply outstanding value for money.

Playing on the brilliant golf courses in Turkey is an experience at par with the other courses in the world. In fact golf has helped enhance Turkey's appeal as a winter-sun holiday destination. A country which was almost a stranger to the game of golf at one time is on the way to becoming one of the top golfing destinations by the next decade drawing both holidaymakers and astute golfers from all over the world.

If you thought Turkey was only about history and beaches better think again it will amaze you.

Downhill Mountain Biking

Author: Jay Bose

1. Pre-ride preparation – Even if you are physically ready and capable to ride downhill, never attempt it if you have not checked your bike. Check if you have the right set of brakes and if it works properly. Do not forget to wear your trusted helmet, a pair of gloves, and pads if available. Mountain Biking - Getting Started

2. Keep it balanced – As you move downhill, shift your body weight as far back on the saddle as possible to counter the angle of descent. If you feel that the front end of the bike wobbles or you are losing control, you may be too far back. Compensate it by leaning forward until you get the right control. Keep your body properly aligned on with your bike. Bend down and hold your body as close to the bike as possible. Bend your arms and legs. They are best shock absorbers especially if the trail is very rough and rutted. The bike is harder to control with stiff body. Relax your muscles and do not grip the handlebar too tightly.

3. Pick a line and stay on it –Instead of picking a spot that you want to avoid, pick a line where you want to go. Make sure that you align your front tube towards that direction. Scan your path in advance for possible hazards and prepare your next action. Planning is essential. It will keep your feet on the pedal and your hands on the handlebar. When scanning, look 15 to 20 feet ahead. Then align your tire towards or away from that direction. Do this throughout your descent.

Even if you have a good set of suspension, try to choose the smoothest path possible. A less rugged path gives you better control of the bike and less body pain after the ride.

4. Keep your senses intact – Do not get carried away with the adrenaline rush. While you can go wild and get crazy, keep your mind focused on the direction of your bike. Remember, lack of concentration for a brief moment can speed a disaster and can send you rolling down the hill ahead of your bike. Always play it safe but still having fun.

5. Control your speed – Sure, you want to feel the wind brushing your face. That is just part of the thrill. But do not substitute wind with mud or rocks. If you want to let go of the brake during descent, it is entirely up to but make sure that you have a complete control over your bike. If fear starts to replace the thrills, better think of slowing down. Do not hit the brake hard though. Gently squeeze both front and rear brake to get to the desired speed.

Watch out for other bikers or unsuspecting hiker ahead of you. You may be riding down too fast and may hit another person. This doesn't mean that you should not go fast, it only means you have to take control of your speed.

Mountain Bike Accessories

Author: Jay Bose

Helmet
Not only it is stupid not to wear one, most public parks and trails prohibit riding without a helmet. Buy it the moment you buy your bike. Many serious head injuries can be prevented by just wearing a helmet. Look for a helmet that provides better insulation; fits properly to your head; and with chin strap to secure it to your head. More About Mountain Biking

Gloves
Gloves serve double purpose: to improve your grip on the handlebar and to protect your hand from cuts and bruises in case you crash. Since the natural tendency during crash is to stretch the arms to cushion the fall, the palms take the most beating. While I do not advice you to use your hands to protect your body from the fall, I will not recommend riding without it. You can choose between cutoff and full-fingered gloves, but I suggest full-fingered. Gloves are the second most important accessory you should have next to helmet.

Repair kit
There is nothing worse than having a breakdown in the middle of nowhere and you cannot do anything about it. Make sure that you put equal importance to repair kit as you can never tell when you will hit a major bump and blow your tire out or when will your chain break due to excessive metal stress. That said, your repair kit should include chain repair tool and tire repair tools such as patches, glue, portable pump with gauge and a spare inner tube. Also include multi-tool set with wrenches to repair mechanical damages.

Hydration system
Just like any other physical activity, mountain biking causes your body to heat up and sweat to keep your core temperature normal. As you sweat, you lose substantial amount of water, and even more if biking is extended for a longer period of time. To replace the water lost and avoid dehydration, you must drink fluid regularly. Water bottle is enough but if you can afford a hydration pack with bladder, it is much better.

Eye protection
Sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement. Glasses offer protection from dust, insects, wind and other foreign objects that can enter your eyes while mountain biking. Glasses also protect you from infrared radiation and ultra-violet rays and it can be used to filter or enhance lighting.

Clothes
The point of buying clothes especially made for biking is to provide enough protection and comfort while riding. But regular shirt and sweatpants are good enough.

Choosing among different brands of bike clothing can be difficult and expensive. Your task is to prioritize what to buy. I suggest that you invest on padded biking shorts first since you have shirts and jackets you can readily pull out from your closet.

Shoes
To add comfort while pedaling, specially-made bike shoes are available. Pick the right shoe that will fit to the terrain you will be riding in and will fit to the type of pedal your bike has.

The accessories are listed according to importance. If the combined cost of all these products goes beyond the budget you set, prioritize on buying the things from the top of the list down.

Watch Live Sports TV Online and Secretly Make Money Under the Radar

Author: Robert Edmonds

You can watch live sports online and record the games to make some money later on. I have used this same system over and over and I wanted to share with you since I have found another way to make lazier money. It involves downloading a satellite TV for pc software from the internet called the pc 2008/2009 elite edition .

Once you have downloaded the pc TV system, you can watch and save all the important NFL and NBA games on your pc. Once saved, you can do virtually anything with these copies. The secret way to make money using past games involves uploading them to file sharing websites that have password protection such that only people that have your authorization can download them to watch.

If you thought past football and basket ball games don’t have a demand, you are wrong. I have used recordings of the same games to make hundreds of dollars weekly without even moving from my pc. All I will do is share the files on mega-upload or many of the password protected file sharing websites. I then offer these files to people at a very small fee, say $2-$5 per game. I get over 50 requests a day when I put an ad in usfreeads.com or craigslist.com for the downloads. It’s therefore possible to make over $150 a day.

As long as you manage to stay off the radar, you will be able to secretly earn a tidy extra income online that can even enable you to finally get a new car or atleast pay rent.

6 Golf Ball Distance Myths You Should Know

Are you a distance freak? In fact, we all are! Seeking maximum golf ball distance have always been on many golfer's mind when they play golf. We all seek better golf clubs, equipments, golf balls and improved golf swings in various attempts to break our distance barrier.

As the game goes by, we get misconceptions here and there based on other's belief and thinking. However, it is important to know what is the real truth behind them or we will be stuck in that same old thinking that is not improving your game at all.

1. The average golf ball distance delivered by Tour players keeps getting longer and longer.

Not really. In fact, driving distance have increased but at a very small margin. The past average was only increased by a mere one to 287.3 yards and though technology have increased player's distance, those on tour are almost reaching a stagnated state. Technology have helped recreational golf ball players get better distance with still the same player profile as before but there is always a limit till what you can do.

2. Long hitters generally get lower scores than shorter hitters.

Not true at all. Some may, some may not. In fact, the longest hitters on tour are not on the top 50 of the money list rankings and score rankings. Ultimately, you need a good blend of skill, distance, fitness, mental condition for you to be at the top. It is not easy at all. Does it mean shorter distance hitters have a chance? Yes, it is definitely a high chance.

3. You need golf swing to help to increase your golf ball distance.

Not really. Swing lessons and fitness lessons do help you increase your golf ball distance. But there is a limit at how much they can do. While Tiger can play and golf ball and bring the best out of them, he still needs the best custom made golf ball to pull the best performance out of his golf ball distance.

4. To get longer golf ball distance, you need to get longer clubs.

Not true at all. In theory, longer shafts equates to longer distance. But the heavy club heads have caused it harder for you to control and maintain a sweet spot hit. In fact, at times shorter club heads will allow you to hit the sweet spot more consistently and get the most distance out of your golf balls.

5. Getting greater golf ball distance needs higher swing speeds.

You can try that again. Time and time again, the equation have always been the correct golf ball for the correct swing speed. Even if you used the "best" golf ball, you might not be guaranteed that it is suited for your swing speed to get greater golf ball distance.

6. A higher golf ball velocity provides greater golf ball distance.
Bobby Jones on Golf: The Classic Instructional by Golf''s Greatest Legend

In theory yes, but golf ball distance is now a function of many other variables. If you add on a top spin onto a golf ball, you might hardly get any distance at all. You still need a correct initial angle of launch, correct loft of golf club, correct type of golf ball and correct amount of spin imparted to the golf ball.

How to Win When Betting on Sports

How to Win When Betting on Sports

Author: Michael Keenan

There is little doubt that sports betting is taking over as the new number 1 in the betting product marketplace. Old favorites such as horse racing, are starting to rapidly lose their market share and a lot of racing industry pundits cannot figure out the reason why? The answer however is quite simple and here it is.

A horse race may consist of up-to 24 runners, with a stunning amount of different variables in place, making it actually quite hard in choosing a correct winning outcome and even after finding your best winning chance or a series of winning chances, there is still a lot which can go wrong. The most notable event, that can either go into your favor or against your favor, is simply the pace of the race itself. Pace/speed is an event which is extremely hard to predict for a horse race and the pace at which a race is run may involve fragments of time as small as 1000th of a second and these fragments can allow either a favorite to win or even that rank outsider, with no race form at all to win. A lot of people do not realize that every horse in a race has an equal chance, as soon as they are in the starting stalls. It does not matter if the horse is a 100 to 1-on favorite or the 500-1 rank outsider, every runner still has an equal chance. However once the race has started momentum, this is when time comes into play, deciding with every stride the actual possible outcome of the race, which makes racing in itself, the ultimate time game of chance.

In sports however, chance is only a very limited element. Statistics defined over a set period can be used through skill, to make a far more predictable correct event outcome, than could ever be achieved in a horse race or similar type event. Hence the reason sports betting is becoming the new wave of betting choice, for both amateur and professional bettors alike. Which would you rather a 24 horse race field or a sports game involving just 2 teams, the choice is really obvious in itself.

So how do you gain good value when betting on sports?

The win bet/match-line bet on sporting events, will at most-times provide an obvious betting choice for most and this type of betting choice requires no real skill at all. However because their is only 2 teams involved, the odds/price can be very low for both teams and/or extremely low for the most favored team.

The point-spread bet, spread or line bet as it is called in different countries, provides a handicap towards a favored team in a game, providing much a better payout value for choosing the correct betting outcome. This type of betting is one however, which does involve real skill, that is if you want to correctly choose a high percentage of winning outcomes, over multiple games, over an extended period of time.

Skill in point-spread betting involves a high degree of experience in many different areas, mathematics being just being one of these key areas. It is a simple fact that sportsbooks, bookmakers etc, are in business to make money and do you think that they would be in a position to take bets on a sporting event, if the odds/price were always in the public's betting favor, absolutely not! Professional handicappers/sports bettors etc, have become an essential first port-of-call for many casual/amateur bettors, because they can provide a highly skilled sports betting choice, which should always put you in a winning point-spread betting situation, over an extended period of time.

The Basics of Winning Sports Betting

In my next article I will be explaining the first key area in becoming an expert in the field of point-spread betting. Entitled: Mathematics in sports betting.

Golf Course Management: The Complexities Of The Career

It's easy to picture a golf course manager as someone who just makes sure everyone is having a good time playing, but golf course management is actually a complex and challenging career. Anyone who wants to enter this field should understand just how many different hats he or she will be wearing and how many different types of jobs they will be doing to make sure the facility they manage is running smoothly and their customers are happy.
Best Golf Course Management Practices

The most obvious focus of the work is Operations; keeping the day to day working of a course, country club or driving range running smoothly. Operations management includes everything from making sure the course opens up on time to making sure cart rental is handled properly and that caddies are lined up for patrons. In the end, it is all about making sure that things happen without a hitch so that patrons are happy and can enjoy playing the game without worries.

The nuts and bolts of Business and Accounting are never far from the mind of a successful course manager, from tracking inventory in the pro shop to knowing what the monthly cash flow is in each department of the course, the manager will oversee millions of dollars and will need an in-depth understanding of how to budget and allocate funds. Fortunately, a bachelor's degree offers business and accounting courses that prepare students for handling all of these details.

Actual course management is another part of the job that contributes to the success of a facility. It requires knowledge of everything from pest management to course design and renovation to make sure the course is always in peak condition and able to compete successfully with other facilities. Changing environmental requirements must also be a concern for anyone in course management.

There is also a portion of managing that requires the same skill set that is needed to successfully run a fine restaurant or hospitality suite. Food and beverage management is taught at academies as a part of the curriculum so that managers can oversee everything from beverage service at the driving range to catering of weddings and banquets in the dining facilities at the club house. These courses will also cover the essentials of ordering and organizing the preparation of the proper quantities of food for special events and tournaments. Decor, inventory and understanding cooking and wait staff needs are all a part of making sure that those dining or drinking at a club's facilities will have a memorable experience.

Marketing and Publicity is essential to successful management. No matter how smoothly the business runs or how fabulous the food and drink service is, if you aren't consistently bringing in new business and successfully retaining the current customers, you won't grow the business. This is why management schools prepare students with courses in marketing, public relations and media relations. Developing strategic partnerships, designing and promoting tournaments, promoting in-house activities and special events and encouraging community outreach are all a part of the success of any club or course, and an experienced administrator will excel in these areas.

Finally, Human Resources are crucial to being the best possible administrator. Recruiting professionals who are the right fit for your green, finding chefs and wait staff who will be an asset to your club's restaurant and understanding how to properly train and retain employees are all crucial skills. You will also need to understand complex payroll, safety and worker's compensation issues. A university offering a bachelor's degree in this industries management will cover all of these areas thoroughly in its coursework.
Best Golf Course Management Practices

It's obvious that it takes a well-rounded, highly educated individual to run a country club successfully. A strong business sense is needed in addition to a love of the game and genuine people skills in order to pursue the long term goals of a growing golf facility. Today's academies offer a balanced blend of classroom work and on the greens instruction to prepare students in order to enter the field of golf course management prepared for anything.

Golf Exercises For Increasing Golf Swing Speed

Golf exercises in the form of core training can be very beneficial to the golf swing. First and foremost we must understand the hierarchy of core training. As with any other aspect of golf fitness training, core training follows a progression. Progression is the process of implementing exercises of greater difficulty over time. This in turns forces the muscular and nervous systems of the body to work harder, allowing the body to become stronger and more powerful as the athlete continues to train.
A simple example of progression is a standard dumbbell bicep curl. If you began performing bicep curls with a 10 lb. dumbbell for 15 repetitions, the exercise would be difficult. The reason for the difficulty is the curling action with 10 lbs. is above and beyond what your muscles are accustomed too. But over time, if you were consistent with your dumbbell bicep curls, your body would adapt to the 10 lbs. and the exercise would become easy. If the desire were to continue to get stronger biceps, it would be necessary to progress (i.e. principle of progression) to a more challenging exercise.

Continuing on with this example, at the beginning of this process of getting stronger biceps. If you were to attempt to lift 20 lb. dumbbells and could not lift the weight, the benefit of such an exercise would be minimal and the possibility of injury would increase dramatically. The reason is the body is simply not ready to perform this exercise. That being said, the principle of progression works in both directions. Not only must you increase the difficulty of exercises when the body is ready to perform them, you must also begin exercise programs with the appropriate exercise selections.

This thought process is extremely important as it pertains to core training and especially power training for the core. All to often a golfer will introduce power exercises into their golf fitness program before the body is ready to perform such high intensity training. It is like trying to perform dumbbell bicep curls with 20 lbs. when the body is only ready for 10 lbs.! It provides no benefit to the body and increases the possibility of injury.

Power training for the core and golf swing requires high levels of flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance to perform correctly. As a result, it is necessary for the golfer to build a base of flexibility and strength through the aforementioned core exercises.

Knowing the importance of progression and the significance this principle bears upon the benefits of your training, following the hierarchy of core training is equally essential. This is simply the order of exercises to follow during this section of your training.

Core training begins with the development of postural strength with exercises such as the Cobras. Once a level of postural strength has been developed we can progress to the strengthening of the abdominals and glutes with exercises like the Jack Knife. After a sufficient amount of strength and endurance has been created within these muscles, we can then add power training to the core program.

Power training exercise for the core ideal for the rotary movements of the golf swing are: Medicine Ball Chop Throws and Address Position Medicine Ball Swings.

To execute the Address Position Medicine Ball Swings requires the use of a 3-6 lb. medicine ball. Begin this exercise in your normal address position, grasping the medicine ball with both hands. Rotate to the top of your backswing maintaining hold of the medicine ball. Pause slightly at the top of your backswing and transition smoothly into the downswing. Continue executing the downswing and release the medicine ball into the floor at the impact position of your swing. Pick up the medicine ball, return to the starting position of the exercise, and repeat for 8-10 repetitions.
The Golf Magazine Complete Guide to Golf

Remember to begin your core training with postural strength exercises and utilize the hierarchy of core training and the principle of progression as you advance to power training. The utilization of these guidelines with your golf exercises can improve the speed within your golf swing. Keep in mind the importance of core training relative to your golf fitness program and what golf exercises you choose to place in this type of a fitness program.

Shorten Your Backswing for More Power

Shorten Your Backswing For More Power By Clive Scarff
(This golf article is followed by a drill, and a link to that drill on video.)

Have you noticed recently that while the golf courses the tour pros play are getting longer and longer, their golf swings are getting shorter? Tiger’s done it. Sergio’s done it. Phil’s done it. Why is that? How can players whose livelihoods depend on dominating long golf courses give up distance by shortening their golf swings? Well, they’re not. Not giving up distance that is.

One of the most important facts to remember when playing or learning golf is that the number one variable in swinging a golf club - that directly relates to distance - is clubhead speed. In my teaching experience most players either do not realize this, or wrongly associate size of swing with clubhead speed.

It’s really this simple: given clubhead speed equals distance - with all else being equal - if my swing is big yet slow and yours is small but fast, you will get more distance than I will. The added bonus is that your shorter swing is likely to be more consistent than my big one.

In my writings I talk a lot about – and try to explain away – many golf myths. One such myth is the supposed need to get the club shaft to horizontal at the top of the golf swing. Why should the golf club get to horizontal? Why is this the ideal position? What is the scientific reasoning for this? Because it is parallel with mother earth? What if it is a little shy of horizontal? What if it goes beyond horizontal (see John Daly)? Getting the club to horizontal is an arbitrary instruction that unfortunately cripples many a player in their efforts to get it there, and distracts them from the primary ingredient of the golf swing: the downswing. What if someone came along and told you it did not matter if you got the club to horizontal or not? What if someone told you you do not need to be a contortionist while executing the backswing? Wouldn’t that lift some big burdens in playing golf?

There is an irony in the fact that most of us try to make a big backswing, while telling our buddies to slow down. What if you were told you could speed up? Should speed up? While many will say that even on the PGA Tour there’s nearly as many different golf swings as there is players, there is one undeniable common denominator among them, and that is acceleration.

Every good player accelerates the golf club to impact. Many a struggling player makes such a big swing that they either get themselves into a position from which acceleration is difficult, or they feel so out of control that they unwittingly decelerate in order to try to gain some control by the time they reach impact. Either way the result usually does not produce the distance desired, or the contact required. Deceleration is contrary to centripetal force while acceleration contributes to it. Suffice to say, two swings that were 90 mph at impact are not the same if one was accelerating from 80 to 90 at impact, while the other was decelerating from 100 to 90 at impact. Consider the racecar driver (or yourself depending on your driving habits) who slows before a curve in the road, and then accelerates into it. Then consider an occasion when you were going too fast for a curve and had to slow down. Remember feeling the difficulty of maintaining control of the vehicle as you encountered the turn? The golf swing is no different. A decelerating golf club cannot remain on its intended path and usually veers wider. This creates a wider arc, the bottom of which is now behind the golf ball. Hello fat shot. Even if your club was going 200 mph before it hit the ground, hitting the ground will have slowed it down immensely, not to mention all the other negative aspects of hitting the big ball (earth) before the small ball (Titleist). The answer is not slowing down.

The answer is acceleration, from an advantageous position. Interestingly, while a big backswing tends to promote deceleration, a short backswing does the opposite. A short backswing promotes acceleration. Your proverbial win-win. Mentally, it is almost like you don’t believe the short backswing will do the trick, so you accelerate to make up for it. Hello good shot. Being it was good, you are willing to try it again. And it works again. The next thing you know, rather than trying to attain difficult physical positions (such as getting the club to horizontal at the top of the backswing) you are practicing accelerating. Imagine practicing something good. Hmmm.

And here’s the bonus to the bonus. Practicing (consistently) leads to muscle memory. Muscle memory leads to speed. Think of anything you do that requires muscle memory and that which you do repeatedly. Whether it is tying your shoelaces, or your tie, or phoning home, you do it quicker now than when you first started. I highly doubt that since you mastered phoning home, you began trying to phone home harder. I highly doubt that since you mastered tying your tie, you began trying to tie your tie bigger. I highly doubt that since mastering tying your laces, you began trying to tie bigger laces. Okay, I am pushing the point. But I think you see the point.

Believe it or not PGA Tour players do not enjoy one luxury we do. They do not have the luxury to mess around with their swings. We can mess around and only our game suffers. They mess around and their day-to-day existence suffers. Tour players have learned that by shortening their swings and working on acceleration they can attain the same (or more) distance they used to, and gain accuracy and consistency – two staples to life on the Tour. That is why we have seen, and will continue to see a growing trend of shorter backswings on the long golf courses of the PGA Tour.

Clive Scarff is a teaching professional and author of Hit Down Dammit! More info can be found at www.hitdowndammit.com.

Drill: Right Hand Thrust Drill

The Right Hand Thrust Drill is one of several found on “Hit Down Drills!” which is one of four DVDs in the Hit Down Dammit! DVD series. The goal of this drill is to learn to accelerate from a shortened backswing position. It’s harder than it looks, but the results will be surprising.

Repeatedly swing your club back to waist-high, pause a split second, then use your right hand to "thrust" the clubhead toward the ball. In doing so, you may find you have created sufficient speed with the clubhead that it follows through to the target automatically, leaving you in a finish position whereby the clubhead is pointing at the target, the toe is up, and the shaft is roughly horizontal (waist-high) and parallel to the target line. This position should roughly mirror your top-of-backswing position.

As you get more proficient at this exercise, you will create more clubhead speed, the momentum from which will see a follow-through that "naturally" swings through a little higher than the height of your backswing. It is important this follow-through is natural - neither forced or abbreviated.
